The Vision CRC Academic Education Program delivers high quality accredited research training to Australian and overseas students, including full and part-time PhD and Masters degrees.
What the Vision CRC offers to Students
A wide range of research opportunities: Vision CRC welcomes students from a large number of disciplines, including optometry, ophthalmology, vision science, clinical science, epidemiology, microbiology, biochemistry, biostatistics, materials science, precision optical and biomedical engineering, polymer and surface chemistry, physiology, vision care delivery, public health, business, and social and behavioural sciences. The Centre provides a wide range of research project opportunities within these disciplines, and works with the student to design research projects of value and interest.
Excellent science: The Vision CRC is a premier research institution. It has been established in an unprecedented collaboration of world-leading researchers, and has projects targetted at the development of crucial understanding and products. Students will have access to state of the art equipment, computer facilities, clinical and laboratory research and expertise.
A multidisciplinary and international research environment: Students will have access to a range of related research areas and information from Vision CRC participants and collaborators, including industry. Students will also interact with national and international research organisations who collaborate on Vision CRC projects.
Interaction with industry: Students will be involved with Vision CRC commercial projects, and will be exposed to all aspects of collaborative and industrial work, including planning and review meetings, research presentations, the protection of IP, and commercialisation strategies. Students will be given the opportunity to spend part of their candidacy in an industrial setting. Industry is also involved in the supervision of students.
Career development and training: Students are mentored by senior researchers. Specific training opportunities are available in research design and methodology, project management, commercialisation, scientific writing, statistics, and animal handling. New students undergo needs assessment upon enrolment, and a modular induction program has been established which includes practical modules such as laboratory safety, protein chemistry, radiation, animal handling, basic laboratory techniques and basic microbiology.
Externships in a range of areas: Externships to broaden the student’s experience are available in industry, and also in other areas of Vision CRC activity such as national or international vision care delivery, business development, or education.
Commercialisation opportunities: The Vision CRC will pursue a range of commercial opportunities for an international market. Students contributing to these projects will learn about commercial processes through interaction with industry, and students who develop IP with commercial potential will be able to pursue commercial opportunities supported by the Vision CRC.
Scholarships: Vision CRC has a range of scholarships available for students.
National and international conferences: Vision CRC supports a high level of student involvement in conferences and collaborations, as an important innovation for research training and career development. Students are provided with support to attend at least one international and national conference during their enrolment, and are given the opportunity to apply for travel grants to attend additional meetings.
Ongoing review and support: All Vision CRC students are reviewed annually at the Postgraduate Review Week to monitor their progress and stimulate the development of skills and opportunities. The Review Week incorporates the annual postgraduate reviews as well as seminars and workshops about issues and skills for postgraduates at all stages of their candidature, such as how to plan a research project, writing a scientific paper, how to produce a research proposal, managing and protecting intellectual property.
Excellent career prospects: The Vision CRC participants have a world-class record in postgraduate student training, and graduates have been highly sought after in the national and international research, education and industry community.
