Hugh Taylor Award (7/13/2007)
Professor Hugh Taylor, Vision CRC Executive Director and Managing Director of the Centre for Eye Research Australia, recently received the 2006 Merck Mectizan Award, in recognition of his 30 year contribution and sustained dedication to the fight against river blindness. Full Story

Jill Keeffe Award (6/18/2007)
Associate Professor Jill Keeffe was recently awarded a Medal in the Order of Australia (General Division) for "service to public health, particularly in the area of vision testing, and as a contributor to the advancement of eyecare education and practice". Associate Professor Keeffe is Program Manager for the Vision CRC’s Vision Care Delivery Program. Full Story

Are you as short-sighted as your brother? (5/25/2007)
Last week Vision CRC PhD student, Mohamed Dirani, presented his work on the genetics of myopia at the CRC Association annual conference in Perth. Mohamed was selected as one of the top four student applications to the “Early Career Scientist Showcase” of the conference. Full Story

Becton Dickinson Award (4/27/2007)
Congratulations go to Tracey Schubert who was awarded the NSW Branch of the Australian Society for Microbiology student award at the prestigious Becton and Dickinson award night on April 17. This highly competitive award was given for Tracey’s presentation on “The effectiveness of novel antibiotics in treating S. aureus microbial keratitis”. Full Story

Record Numbers Attend Congress on Refractive Error (3/29/2007)
This month over 650 delegates gathered in South Africa to address a key public health challenge of our time. Eyecare professionals, researchers, governments and industry from all over the world attended the first World Congress on Refractive Error and Service Development, hosted by ICEE (a core partner of the Vision CRC). Kovin Naidoo: International Optometrist of the Year (3/22/2007)
Professor Kovin Naidoo has been chosen as the 2007 International Optometrist of the Year by the World Council of Optometry, for his “outstanding commitment to optometry and the community at large.” Kovin was particularly commended on his work to advance public health in developing nations. The award will be presented in Mexico on April 27, 2007. Full Story

Sunnies for Sight Day 2007 (3/16/2007)
National Sunnies for Sight Day, the fundraising day for the International Centre for Eyecare Education, was a great success on 23 February this year. Teams across Sydney and Melbourne sold Sunnies merchandise; and more than 300 pre-schools and 400 schools participated, as well as close to 3000 workplaces – up from 1300 in 2006. Full Story
